Costa Brava Holiday - The Hidden Gem of the Mediterranean
Costa Brava holiday - what images come to mind when asked that question? Images that involve glossy, sunscreen-oiled bodies crowded together over long stretches of sand; towering, impersonal hotel and apartment blocks all basking in sweltering hot sunshine with the smell of fast food wafting over the whole picture. "CUT"!as the film industry folks would cryThis is NOT the setting for a Costa Brava holiday. True, a few of the resorts such as Blanes, Lloret de Mar and Platja d'Aro have sweeping expanses of white sand behind which straight-as-a-die promenades stroll and of course, many of the hotels and apartment blocks look down from their lofty heights, but this is not the norm. It is more the exception to the rule and in true Costa Brava style even manages to make these quintessential holiday destinations that little bit special. Like everything, it's a matter of individual taste and the Costa Brava is lucky to be able to offer something for everyone, young and old.

The Costa Brava starts in the north in the Girona region known as Alt Emporda on the Spanish border with France at the foothills of the Pyrenees.Pretty fishing villages dot the coastline reminding us of a less hectic life where you can relax and enjoy your surroundings.
Cadaques is one such village with narrow winding streets lined with white-washed houses coming right down to the waters edge.
Salvador Dali fell in love with the light and colour here in Cadaques, making it his home. The house today is a museum which is one of Catalunya's most visited.
Carry on along the rugged coastline of Cap Creus and you will wind your way into the Bay of Roses.
Roses itself is very much a family orientated seaside destination, very popular because of its safe bathing and sandy beaches. Named after the Greek sailors from Rhodes, it was the main destination for the 1950's tourist boom. Today Roses is popular not only with small families, but also those looking for an exciting nightlife. El Bulli, the world famous restaurant is situated just outside the town, down a dirt track. Be warned, although El Bulli is only open for about six months of the year, it is fully booked for each season long before the season begins! Take a look at my blog to find out all about El Bulli and the best way to get a chance to experience the world's best restaurant! Inland from Roses, some 20 minutes by car, you will come to the sophisticated town of Figueres, birthplace of Salvador Dali and home to the Dali Theatre Museum.
